on the response to the milestone week to the dow, let's go to kristen welker at the white house for us. good saturday morning to you. what is the take on the latest economic news, after the rocky start with the negative gdp number? >> good morning, alex. a real mixed bag this week. the white house responding as they typically do, when we get one of these jobs reports or gdp reports, saying, look, these are signs that the economy is recovering, but that there is still a lot of work left to be done. particularly on the jobs report, to take that part, alex. the white house pointing that the jobs numbers were revised last year and at the ends the e month to show higher hiring. the fact nah manufacturing, construction, had a strong showing in the jobs report, but, of course, the negative side of that, the unemployment rate did tick up to 7.9%. that is indication there is more work to be done on the economy. republicans pointing to that number and the gdp report which showed the economy basically shrunk to say that the obama economy is not working. you look at the gdp number, what is interesting,
i'd say almost purely destructive because it has, in fact, led us to some short-term budget cuts that are harmful. it has not led to any resolution of long-term issues which i don't think is possible in this political environment. >> is there any way now to create a bunch of jobs? >> oh -- >> how? how would you create jobs right now? >> if we could do a slug of federal aid to state and local governments that would let them rehire school teachers they laid off and restart the road repair project they've put on ice. right there you could create over a million jobs directly and a half million more indirectly through the effects of demand. if we did that, within 18 months, the unemployment rate would be somewhere in the low sixes. it's -- technically, economically it's the easiest thing in the world. politically we know it's not going happen. it's all about the politics. it's not about economics. >> let's keep the conversation going. you can find us on facebook and twitter. our handle is cnnbottomline, my handle is @christineromans. join me at 1:00 p.m. for "your money." hear why bil
. >>> good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. glad you're with us this morning. we begin with new allegations of drug use against alex rodriguez. it's not the first time that he's been accused of using performance enhancing drugs. the first time was actually several years ago. the current chatter is that it happened again last year. our national correspondent, susan candiotti, is in new york. what is behind the new allegations? >> reporter: good morning. it looks like a-rod's ped controversy wga won't go away. now there's another report alleging alex rodriguez got home visits to his waterfront miami mansion from a man who ran a clinic. espn quoting unidentified sources says that man, anthony bosh, injected a-rod with performance enhancing drugs. once bosh was reportedly kicked out of a-rod's home after bosh allegedly had trouble finding a vein. similar drug claims were leveled earlier this week. in the "miami times" newspaper, it says it has a diary containing notes from bosh detailing drugs including human growth hormone given to several athletes. cnn has been unable to independently see the
